A Prayer Ascended from Africa

On the grassy plains of Africa,
A young woman would stand,
With dreams of her friend
In a far-away land.

In her mind's eye,
She envisioned her face
And in her soul cried
For God's saving grace.

A fervent, yet simple
Prayer had ascended,
For the soul of another
She once had befriended.

But isn't life strange
And yet oddly sweet…
That twenty years later
These two friends should meet?

Amidst reminiscing
Of old friends and ties,
Their talk had grown solemn
And revealed a surprise-

When a prayer was said
On that day long ago…
That was the day
God saved her friend's soul…

for my friend
Long may she pray
